The Lab Band of the McGill Schulich School of Music
Thanks to a close collaboration between the Schulich School of Music at McGill and our bands, our musicians have the opportunity to participate in the Lab Band.
The Lab Band is associated with an undergraduate course for music education students. During the course, four or five students learn to conduct a "laboratory" orchestra which is composed of students who play an instrument other than their usual instrument to prepare them for teaching instrumental music in schools.
Members of the New Horizons Harmony of Montreal are invited to participate in this course: what a privilege! Rehearsals take place twice a week at McGill for approximately eight weeks in the Fall and Winter terms. The repertoire is at the beginner level and consists of a dozen pieces, five of which are also part of the repertoire of our orchestra 'Adagio'. Participating in this course requires a certain commitment: all classes, dress rehearsals and end-of-session concerts at McGill University's Pollack Hall must be attended.
Even if you don't join the Lab Band, all members of the HNHM (Initiation, Adagio, and Allegro) are invited to play the common pieces at the concert in Pollack Hall in December and April.
If you have any questions, please contact one of our members who has already participated: Monique (clarinet), Peter (bass clarinet), Hélène (flute), Barbara (alto sax) and Wassili (trombone).
Exact dates and times will be announced by email in September and January.
We also take this opportunity to introduce you to the activities of the Schulich School of Music. Many concerts are offered for free or at a very reasonable cost. You can also find the brochure detailing all the activities of the music school, at the entrance to the music pavilion.
